Overview
The 4-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic trekking routes on the planet, where history, nature, and culture intertwine in an unforgettable journey. For 43 kilometers, you’ll trek along ancient paths that connect towering Andean mountains, deep valleys, and high jungle, passing by important Inca archaeological sites such as Patallacta, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, and Wiñaywayna. Each step brings you closer to the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku), from where you’ll have your first magical view of Machu Picchu. Itinerary
Day 1 – Cusco – Piskacucho (Km 82) – Wayllabamba
➡️ Pick-up from your hotel in Cusco and transfer to Km 82, the starting point of the trek.
➡️ Begin the hike by crossing the bridge over the Urubamba River with views of the snow-capped La Verónica mountain.
➡️ Visit the archaeological site of Patallacta, an ancient agricultural and ceremonial center.
➡️ Lunch en route and continuation to the first campsite in Wayllabamba (3,000 m.a.s.l.).
➡️ Dinner and overnight stay under the Andean stars.
Day 2 – Wayllabamba – Warmiwañusca – Pacaymayu
➡️ Early breakfast and ascent to the highest point of the trek, Warmiwañusca Pass (4,215 m.a.s.l.), known as the “Dead Woman’s Pass.”
➡️ Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views before descending to the Pacaymayu Valley (3,600 m.a.s.l.).
➡️ Lunch, dinner, and overnight camping.
Day 3 – Pacaymayu – Runkurakay – Sayacmarca – Wiñaywayna
➡️ Ascent to the second pass at Runkurakay (3,950 m.a.s.l.), visiting the archaeological site of the same name.
➡️ Descent towards Sayacmarca, the “Inaccessible City,” famous for its strategic location.
➡️ Lunch at Chaquicocha and ascent to the third pass, Phuyupatamarca (3,700 m.a.s.l.), with majestic views of the Vilcabamba mountain range.
➡️ Descent through the high jungle to Wiñaywayna (2,650 m.a.s.l.), the last campsite.
➡️ Dinner and final rest before the big day.
Day 4 – Wiñaywayna – Inti Punku – Machu Picchu – Cusco
➡️ Early departure to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) to enjoy the sunrise over Machu Picchu.
➡️ Entrance to the citadel and a guided tour of approximately 2 hours through the main areas.
➡️ Free time to explore or climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (optional).
➡️ Descent to Aguas Calientes for lunch and to take the train back to Cusco, arriving around 8:00 p.m.
